Colocasia and Alocasia Care

Caring for Alocasia and Colocasia in Malaysia

Alocasia and Colocasia, also known as elephant ears, are popular tropical plants native to Southeast Asia. These plants are known for their large, glossy leaves that can add a touch of the exotic to any garden or indoor space. However, caring for these plants in the tropical climate of Malaysia can be a bit tricky. In this post, we will discuss the best ways to care for Alocasia and Colocasia in Malaysia and how to use Organic Shamrock Botanics' Potting Mix, Fertiliser, and Organic Pesticide to ensure your plants thrive.

Alocasia Amazonica

Light and Temperature

Alocasia and Colocasia prefer bright, indirect light but can tolerate some shade. They thrive in temperatures between 20 and 30 °C and can tolerate temperatures as high as 32 °C. However, they should be protected from direct sunlight, which can cause leaf burn. Here in Malaysia, it is best to place these plants in a shaded area or indoors - our weather is quite unpredictable.

Soil and Potting

Alocasia and Colocasia require well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Organic Shamrock Botanics' Potting Mix is a great option for these plants, as it is made from a blend of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite. This mix provides the perfect balance of moisture and aeration for the roots of the plant. Any other medium are fine, as long as they are porous.

When potting Alocasia and Colocasia, it is important to use a pot that has drainage holes. This will allow excess water to drain away from the roots and prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Remember - WHENEVER IN DOUBT, DON'T WATER. We shall explain why in our next posts.

Fertiliser and pesticide

Alocasia and Colocasia require regular fertilisation to promote healthy growth. They tend to attract pests more than any other houseplants. We can't blame them for looking so good, right? Organic Shamrock Botanics' Fertiliser is a great option as it is made from natural ingredients and is safe for use on all types of plants. The fertiliser should be applied every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.

Pests and diseases can also be problems for these plants, but Organic Shamrock Botanics' Organic Pesticide is a safe and effective solution. This pesticide is made from natural ingredients and is safe for use on all types of plants. When "treating" plants, it's best to give them what works but also as organic as possible, just like all beings.

Watering

Alocasia and Colocasia require consistent moisture, but they do not like to be waterlogged. The soil should be kept evenly moist but not soggy. In Malaysia's hot and humid climate, it is important to check the soil frequently and water as needed. It is also a good idea to mist the leaves of the plant to provide additional humidity. Use a Sustee Aquameter, it helps alot!

Final Thoughts

Caring for Alocasia and Colocasia in Malaysia's tropical climate can be a bit tricky, but with the right soil, fertilizer, pesticide, and watering techniques, these plants can thrive. "Senang-saja" as we say.

It's worth to note that organic Shamrock Botanics' Potting Mix, Fertiliser, and Organic Pesticide are great options to ensure your plants stay healthy and grow vigorously. With proper care, Alocasia and Colocasia can add a touch of the exotic to any garden or indoor space. Happy planting!
